چکیده

A line l is called a separator for a set S of objects in the plane if l avoids all the objects and partitions S into two non empty sub sets lying on both sides of l A set L of lines is said to shatter S if each line of L is a separator for S and every two objects of S are separated by at least one line of L We give a simple randomized algorithm to construct the set of all separators for a given set S of n line segments in expected time O n log n provided the ratio be tween the diameter of S and the length of the shortest line segment is bounded by a constant We also give a randomized algorithm to determine a set of lines shattering S whose expected running time is O n logn improving for this setting the deterministic O n log n time algorithm of Freimer Mitchell and Piatko

Separating and Shattering Long Line Segments ?

A line l is called a separator for a set S of objects in the plane if l avoids all the objects and partitions S into two non-empty subsets, lying on both sides of l. A set L of lines is said to shatter S if each line of L is a separator for S, and every two objects of S are separated by at least one line of L. We give a simple randomized algorithm to construct the set of all separators for a gi...

Shattering a set of objects in 2d

In this paper, we propose an algorithm for shattering a set of disjoint line segments of arbitrary length and orientation placed arbitrarily on a 2D plane. The time and space complexities of our algorithm are O(n2) and O(n) respectively. It is an improvement of the O(nlogn) time algorithm proposed in [5]. A minor modi cation of this algorithm applies when objects are simple polygons, keeping th...

LINE-SEGMENTS CRITICAL SLIP SURFACE IN EARTH SLOPES USING AN OPTIMIZATION METHOD

In this paper the factor of safety (FS) and critical line-segments slip surface obtained by the Alternating Variable Local Gradient (AVLG) optimization method was presented as a new topic in 2D. Results revealed that the percentage of reduction in the FS obtained by switching from a circular shape to line segments was higher with the AVLG method than other methods. The 2D-AVLG optimization meth...

Separating objects in the plane by wedges and strips

In this paper we study the separability of two disjoint sets of objects in the plane according to two criteria: wedge separability and strip separability. We give algorithms for computing all the separating wedges and strips, the wedges with the maximum and minimum angle, and the narrowest and the widest strip. The objects we consider are points, segments, polygons and circles. As applications,...

Computing Largest Circles Separating Two Sets of Segments

A circle C separates two planar sets if it encloses one of the sets and its open interior disk does not meet the other set. A separating circle is a largest one if it cannot be locally increased while still separating the two given sets. An (n log n) optimal algorithm is proposed to nd all largest circles separating two given sets of line segments when line segments are allowed to meet only at ...
